Mandate

NRCR&LF under the Department of Livestock shall be the competent authority for the provision of technical advice for the sustainable use, conservation and management of fish and other living aquatic resources.

 

Background

National Research Centre for Riverine & Lake Fisheries, erstwhile the National Cold Water Fishery Centre was established in June 2005. The centre is one of the national level commodity programs under the Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture & Forests. NRCR&LF is established on a 9-acre land and is currently manned by 11 technical, 5 non-technical staffs and 11 ESPs. The fisheries program is headed by a Program Director. Besides the main administrative building, the premise also holds one of the functional unit farms, the Trout Breeding Centre. The main aim of the center is to promote and develop fish culture based on cold-water fish species. The TBC is also involved in fish conservation program.

To enhance fish production through sustainable utilization of Bhutan’s fishery resources to supplement the national goal of achieving self-sufficiency in food.

To be a premier institution involved with development of riverine and lake fisheries including taking care of all aspects of fishery research in Bhutan.
